QUOTES:

  • (Cates) "You know why I did it...All it says is that man wasn't just stuck here like a geranium in a flowerpot; that living comes from a long miracle, it didn't just happen in seven days." (Rachel) "There's a law against it." (Cates) "I know that...It isn't as simple as taht. Good or bad, black or white, night or day..." (Rachel) "Why can't you be on the right side of things?" (Cates) "Your father's side." Pg 9

- this quote shows how Rachel can't think for herself and always goes with what everyone else belives... for example creationism as opposed to evolutionism. Cates can think for himself and makes intelligent decisions based on his beliefs. Cates knows exactly what he's doing when he breaks the law and heads for trial, but Rachel does not know what she is doing and side with what the greater majority of the town believes in, which is creationism.

  • (Hornbeck) "The unplumbed and plumbing-less depths! Ahhhh, Hillsboro---Heavenly Hillsboro. The buckle on the Bible Belt."Pg 15

- Hornbeck is making fun of the town, saying that it's backwards. He is also saying that Hillsboro is the main town in the Bible Belt, which he's comparing to an actual belt and buckle because Hillsboro is the most important town and the belt buckle is the most noticable and important part of a belt.

Elijah is described as a holy man from the hills. he wears teathered clothes and sells bibles with his sign "how will you spend eternity?" when ask if he can read and write he replies no. this is a steroe type for christians. This is saying that even though they seem to have a strong beliefe in God and the bible they actually have no clue what they are preaching and are uncivilized. (page 14)

on page 15, when hornbeck is offered both a hotdog and a bible he says "Now that poses a problem, which is hungrier, my soul or my stomach?" hornbeck then buys a hotdog. this action shows how hornbeck turns down religion. he would rather please his stomach now that wait and suffer the please his sould such as the religious people do.

Also, he is showing somthing bigger. He is representing the jazz age. during the jazz age, people don't beleive in God; they just want to have a good time. Hornbeck ceases to believe that God exists. Therefor he isn't worried about the afterlife, and feeding his soul, when he believes that there may not even be an afterlife.

Brady is the Creationism supporter. he says to the town people (not literaly) to not consider evolution, only think about God and the bible. this is completely different from what the jazz age people think, which is to be a free thinker, such as Hornbeck. (page 19)

Brady's wife is viewed some what like Rachel. she is a follower and is really unsure of what she believes in. as said in the book, she is always in Brady's shadow, but it does not annoy her(page 19).

Brown's description of Drummond

"I can still see him, a slouching hulk of a man, whose head juts out like an animal's. You look into his face, and you wonder why God ever made such a man, And then you know that God didn't make hime, that he is a creature of the Devil, perhaps even the devil himself" (page 28)

In this quote Brown is making Drummond a villian because he is not a christian, but atheist. drummond is, though, ahead of his time, he is a free thinker and believes that there is no pfroof in God, so there is no God.

Brady

"If the enemy sends its Goliath into battle it magnifies our cause. Henry Drummond has stalked the courtrooms for forty years . when he fights, headlines follow. The whole world will be watching our victory of Drummond. If St. George had slain a dragonfly who would remember him."?

In this quote Brady is expressing his joy about Drummong be the defendant's lawyer, for he will give major publicity to the case. When drummond is reffered to as Goliath he is being branded as evil and he has a bad reputation for his defending murderes. Brady also says that if he had lawyered against a nobody, who would have cared if he had one or not. Brady believes that he is the underdog and he is going to beat the big guy

Rachel - You couldn't understand. Mr. Brady is the champion of ordinary people, like us.

Hornbeck- wake up sleeping beauty. the ordinary people played a dirty trick on Colonel Brady. they ceased to exist. time was when Brady was the hero of the

hunterland, water-boy for the great unwashed. but they've got plumming in their heads these days! there's a highway through the backwoods now, and the trees of the forset have reluctantly made room for their leefless cousins, the telephone poles. Henry's lizzie rattles into town and leaves behind the yesterday messiah, standing in the road alone. in a cloud of flivver dust. the boob has been de-boobed. Colonel Brady's virginal small-towner had been had. by marconi and montgomery ward.

Rachel is missing whats going on in the real world and Brady is not the MAN anymore. Brady used to be the hero of the country but people can think for themselves and the town and its people are not backwards and closed off anymore. people can come and go as they please and information comes because of transportation and communication. The stupid people have been de-stupified and the small town has been infaltrated with outside information, it is no longer pure.

Hornbeck - Have a bite? (reffering to an apple while talking to rachel) don't worry. I'm not he serpent, little Eva. This is't from the tree of Knowledge. you won't find one of those in the orchards of Heavenly Hillboro. Birches, Beeches, Butternuts. a few ignorance bushes. No tree of knowlegde.

He is saying that he is not the Devil and she, if she were to eat the apple, would not open her eyes to all the bad that is going on around her. he is saying that her town and its people are ignorant.

Also, Hornbeck is telling Rachel to wake up and look around, because while the town and people are progressing, she is still stuck in her own "backwards" world.

Drummond (to Judge, regarding mr. sillers) That man's all right, take a box seat Mr Sillers

Brady I am not altogether satisfied with that Mr. Sillers will render impartial

Drummond out of order. the prosecution has already accepted this man

Brady i want a fair trial

Drummond so do I!

Brady Unless the state of mind of the members of the jury conforms to the lawa and patterns of society...]

Drummond Conform! conform! what do you want to do-run the jury through a meat grinder so they all come out the same?

This quote shows that Drummond chooses mr. sillers because he is not a REAL christian, but brady says no because he only wants a Real christian jury so he will win. Drummond says, why do you want everyone to be the same, they can all think for themselves and they have individual minds.

Drummond All i want is to prevent the clock-stoppers from dumping a load of medival nonsense into the United States Constitution.

Drummond is saying that he doesn't want christian (clock-stoppers) putting their faith (medival nonsense)into the constitution, because religion and law are two seperate things.

"There's a highway through the backwoods now, and the trees of the forest have reluctantly made room for their leafless cousins the telephone poles. Henry's Lizzie rattles into town and leaves behind Yesterday-Messiah, standing in the road alone in a cloud of flivver dust. the boob has been de-boobed. Colonel Brady's virginal small-towner has been had...." -Hornbeck

Here, Hornbeck is trying to explain to Rachel that Brady is no longer the only person to listen to. Now people can call each other and find out news, of they can go to the next town in a car to find out what is happening. They no longer have to wait for someone like Brady to come and tell them what to think, they can see what is happening and make their own conclusions (the boob has been de-boobed.) By saying the virginal small-towner has been had, he is saying that people in small town now have information from the outside and are not just believing what they are told by people in their own town. Through all of this Hornbeck is saying that Brady is not all that he used to be.

When Hornbeck is offered a hot dog or a bible he says, "Now that poses a problem, which is hungrier, my soul or my stomach?" he then chooses the hot dog. this not only shows a lot about Hornbeck's character but also a lot about people in the Jazz Age. It shows that their belief in God has diminished and they only care about their current self. Ultimitly, they care mosr about physical satisfaction than religion.

Rachel: You dont care anything about Bert! You just want a chance to make speeches against the Bible!

Drummond: I care a great deal about Bert. I care a great deal about what Bert thinks

Rachel: Well I can about how people in this town think of him

(Page 51) This quote shows how Rachel thinks of the court case. She wants to be on Berts side but to many people are against him. She is more concerned about how people are going to look at him and think of him, rather then being concerned with if Bert is guitly or not. Rachel is so concerned with how everyone else thinks of her and the people in her life that it controls her. Drummond thinks of Cates as a person with feels and respects that about him and respects his veiws and opinions. Rachel just wants everything to go back tot he way it was before. She is not a charecter who likes change.

Judge - ...... Oh, the Reverend Brown has asked me to make this announcement. there will be a prayer meeting tonight on the courthouse lawn. to pray for justice and guidance. All are invited.

Drummond - Your Honor. I object to this comercial announcement.

Judge - Comercial announcement?

Drummond - For Reverend Brown's product. Why don't you announce that there will be an evolutionist meeting?

Judge - I have no knowledge of such a meeting.

Drummond - Thats understandable. it's bad enough that everybody coming into the courtroom has to walk underneath a banner that says: "Read Your Bible" Your Honor, i want that sign taken down! or else i want another one put up- just as big, just as big letters- saying "Read Your Darwin"

This quote shows just how unfair this court is. the judge is saying that he wants the people to pray (creation, religion) for justice (cates in jail, no more evolution). this also shows how Drummond wants a fair trial. he says either stop publicizing creation, or start publicizing evolution.

Drummond - I care a great deal about Bert. I care a great deal about what Bert thinks.

This quote shows Drummond saying how he cares about Bert and he values what he thinks. Drummond is saying how he will defend him no matter what he believes in as long as he believes what he is fighting for is right. Also, he is saying to think for yourself.

Drummond - you murder a wife , it isnt nearly as bad as murdering a old wives tale. Kill one of their fairy-tale notions, and they call down the wrath of God, Brady, and the state legislator.

Drummond is saying in this quote that killing someone is not as badb as killing thier faith. and when you destroy thier faith you can not have done anything worse.
